Dr Giuliana Noratto, assistant professor of nutrition and main author of the study, recalls the importance of good nutrition in the prevention of cancer and the importance of an adequate intake of sufficient fruits and vegetables. Originating in Peru, she has worked a lot on the antioxidant activity of rooted plants in the great tradition of medicinal plants. In 2009, his team had already carried out a study showing the ability of extracts of peaches and plums to eliminate the cells of breast cancer in culture. Here, the researchers have implanted in mice breast cancers cells and assesses the growth of these cells in mice.
The team found that these fisheries poly-phenols inhibit the growth of the tumor and reduce the metastasis in the lungs. After 12 days of poly-phenols high doses, mice have tumors less developed and angiogenesis without fostering the spread to other organs of the body. The analysis also revealed reduced levels of enzymes known to be involved in the spread of cancer.
The team is working today on other foods; the wheat, barley, apples and dairy products which could play an important role in the prevention of co-morbidity of obesity.
